January 2022 Summit and Park County Community Insider

Happy New Year and welcome to the January 2022 Summit and Park County Community Insider. Winter is well underway and while the holiday break has come to a close there are still many upcoming local events to keep you entertained. Here’s a highlight reel of a few you might find interesting.

Rocky Mountain Underground Ski-O

Every Thursday evening Rocky Mountain Underground in Breckenridge hosts RMU Ski-O for all skill levels.

Skiers meet at 5:00 pm at the storefront/brewery at 114 South Main Street and head to one of the peak base areas to group skin up and ski down. Make sure you bring a headlamp as they are required. And if you’re unfamiliar with how RMU got started it’s an interesting story. Here’s an excerpt from their website:

“Rocky Mountain Underground was founded in 2008, building skis in a garage for 30 packs of beer. Today, it’s a whole lot more.

In 2015, RMU transcended from fire-truck offices to its first location in our hometown of Breckenridge Colorado. With more than enough room available for our gear and equipment, we wondered what to do with the rest. The age-old question arose, why not open a bar?

Located on Breckenridge’s Main Street, you’ll now find two buildings side-by-side hosting the busiest bars in town. A community hub for all mountain life, consisting of live music, charity events, trivia, skis, equipment & gear services, all coupled with an extensive beer and cocktail list in our homebuilt bar.”

RMU Ski-O is free for all to attend and participants are offered a free beverage afterward. If you haven’t had an opportunity to spend some time in this Breckenridge staple now is a perfect opportunity!

International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge

Every year in January, Breckenridge hosts the International Snow Sculpture Championships in the Riverwalk Center downtown. Gifted artists from all over gather to transform 20-ton blocks of snow into temporary works of art.

The process begins well before any sculpting actually takes place. The week before “Sculpting Week” (which is January 24-28) movers bring in the snow blocks which need time to settle under their own weight before the artists can get to work. We suggest planning a trip downtown during the evening and after the 26th. This is because the sculptures are especially magical with the LED light displays at night and you’ll have the opportunity to cast your vote for a favorite starting on January 26th. Voting closes on the 29th at noon.

Keystone’s Winter Bluegrass Weekend

Celebrating its 10th year on January 28th and 29th, Keystone’s Winter Bluegrass Weekend brings acoustic roots and mountain culture to Warren Station for two nights. Each evening features a talented lineup of some of Colorado’s best string bands and culminates with headliners the Red Mountain Boys on Friday and High Country Hustle on Saturday. Tickets are on sale now through Eventbrite and the shows start at 7:30. Get your tickets by clicking here.

Some Final Thoughts

As we reflect on the past twelve months we are especially grateful to call this beautiful area of Colorado home. We have been blessed to be able to serve clients in an industry that we love and a community that we care about. The past couple of weeks has been made especially hard on many families due to devastating wildfires and our hearts go out to all those affected. It has been uplifting to see how our communities have banded together in such a great time of need. There are true heroes all around us and we are grateful for all of them.
