July Summit and Park County Community Insider

July is upon us! With Covid restrictions continuing to loosen businesses are opening up to full capacity again. We’re seeing tourism and travel increasing and both the weather and the real estate market are heating up! One of the greatest gifts of living in the Summit/Park County area is the unlimited opportunity to get outside. Whether you’re looking for adventure, a gourmet meal, or shopping for world-class artwork, there is something for everyone. Here are a few of the local events and activities I hope to check out this summer.

Gold Runner Coaster and Alpine Slide

Every summer the Breckenridge resort transforms into a fun activity park where opportunities abound for adventure. Family members of all ages will find something that piques their interest. Take a ride on the BreckConnect Gondola or enjoy a scenic bike ride on one of the many trails. The kids will enjoy the Bungee Trampoline, Ropes course and Kids Zipline. Or the entire family can play a round on the miniature golf course. If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous I recommend the GoldRunner Coaster and Alpine Slide.

Hop on the GoldRunner for an exciting 2,500-foot race down the mountain. The elevated roller coaster winds through the dense forest and is open year-round, although I suspect many of us prefer to take advantage of it during the summer months! The Alpine Slide (also known as the Super Slide) boasts three tracks that stretch 2,600 feet down the mountain and dip, turn and twist at exhilarating speeds. Because it’s also located on Peak 8, your admission is good for the entire park! Another added bonus is that both the GoldRunner and Alpine Slide can accommodate children as young as three.

The Breck has seemingly limitless opportunities for fun! You can purchase ticket packages and explore all that the mountain has to offer on their website

72nd Annual Pack Burro Race & Festival

Fairplay, a quaint mountain town at the heart of Park County, has a vibrant arts community and plays host to a number of fun and interesting events throughout the summer. One that you are sure to find entertaining is the 72nd Annual Pack Burro Race and Festival. This weekend-long event kicks off on July 23rd with a free concert on 5th and Main Streets. The main event, which is a miles-long burro race, takes place on Sunday but there’s plenty to keep you entertained in the meantime. The festival also offers Lama races, a kids dog race, and over 140 local food, art, and craft vendors. You’ll also find gunfights, gold panning, amusement rides, and live music! It’s truly fun for the entire family!

Before you head out of town I also recommend that you stop by the Fairplay Gem, Mineral & Jewelry Show which will be open that weekend as well. Located across the river at the River Park Event Site, this event is free and open until 5pm daily. You can find directions, a full schedule of events, and read the story of how this fun festival got its start on the Burro Days website

Lake Dillon Arts Festival

Maybe something at a little slower pace sounds more appealing. If that’s the case I suggest checking out the Lake Dillon Arts Festival. This festival is an offshoot of the longest-running and most established arts festival in Summit County and showcases 90 of the area’s finest artisans.

Running from July 16 – 18 this free Summit County event is open to the public and features contemporary, traditional, abstract, mixed media, and sculpture. The festival also features live music throughout the event. Locals and tourists alike will enjoy all that it has to offer.
