Welcome to the October 2022 edition of our Summit and Park County Community Insider! The weather is turning crisp, leaves are changing colors and, hopefully, you’re getting started on the holiday shopping early. If you need some inspiration in the gift department stop by Belvidere & Hern in Breckenridge, you can find something for everyone on your list or just spend an afternoon browsing their unique selection of wares.
Are you more of a last-minute shopper? That’s okay, we have a few in our family too! There are plenty of other fun and festive activities happening this month to keep you busy. Let’s take a look at a few of our favorites.
Breckenridge Craft Spirits Festival
The Breckenridge Craft Spirits Festival is back October 7-9th with a variety of entertainment taking place all over downtown. The main event is Saturday, with the Still on the Hill Grand Tasting which starts at 4pm. This is the premier craft-spirits tasting in Colorado. It brings together all of the finest small-batch distillers who will share their talents with you. There will be artisan snacks, the best spirits and Bluegrass music rounds out the atmosphere. This is a 21+ event, but the weekend also includes these event highlights, a few of which are more family friendly and we’ll talk about in more detail shortly.
- Friday Night Welcome Party at Ollie’s Pub
- Craft Cocktails around town
- Breckenridge Distillery Tours and Happy Hour
- Bawdy Breckenridge Tour
- Tombstone Tales Tour
- Museum and History Tours
- Bloody Sunday and Hangover Brunch Specials (there are various participating locations in Breckenridge)
- Dine Out Promotion- October 9-15
Historic and Spooky Breckenridge Tours
There’s a lot of history in this area – and if you’re a big fan of history and Halloween a few of these tours are probably worth adding to your calendar! We won’t go through all of the tours listed above but will highlight a few of the more festive ones. The historic Valley Brook Cemetery, on Airport Road in Breckenridge, was built in 1882 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. People from many different walks of life – miners, family members young and old, wealthy and poor are buried here. There are a few groups that offer tours of the Cemetery and area. These are fun and informative, the guides reveal stories about those who have lived, and died, in our historic Mountain Town, widespread illness, accidents and conflict.
A few of the tours offered this month include the Ghostly Tales Tour, a Strange but True tour and if you’re brave enough, the Voices from the Grave tour. There’s even a Halloween night Haunted Tour by lantern light. Whichever tour you decide on keep in mind there are no restrooms or facilities on site and it’s smart to bring water and dress for the weather. Click here or here for more info and to book tickets.
The Coroner’s Ball – Ghouls & Goblins Night Out in Frisco
Come celebrate Halloween at the Coroner’s Ball, this weekend on Frisco’s Main Street! All proceeds from the event support Summit County’s Survivor Support program. What is the Survivor Support program? Many people may not know that in the event of a death, Summit County provides support services to the family and friends of the person who has passed. These services can oftentimes include counseling, emotional support, financial assistance for burials, advocacy, help with paperwork, and referrals for other types of assistance. Support Services staff are trained professionals from a variety of fields, including medicine, mental health and law enforcement. It’s a great program, and the Coroner’s Ball is a great way to raise money for a worthy cause. They’ll have a silent auction, costume contest, drinks, and dancing. Tickets are $25 and you can purchase them here or at the door (10 Mile Music Hall) on the day of the event.
