Summit and Park County October Community Insider

Welcome to our October edition of the Summit & Park County Community Insider. Last weekend’s annual Silverthorne Pumpkin Fest kicked off the month of October. And with nearly 3,000 pumpkins, train rides, pony rides, and a spooky circus show for the kids, this family-friendly festival is a great way to usher in the colder weather. Although fall is quickly turning into winter there are still plenty of great outdoor activities to take in before the mountain opens on November 12th. And if you haven’t already bought your Epic Pass for Breckenridge Resort you can still get it for 20% discount until October 14th.

A Fisherman’s Paradise

Summit and Park County is filled with lakes, rivers, ponds, and creeks. There is excellent, year-round fishing in every corner of our mountain playground. In the fall it tends to be less crowded, with clearer days and fewer bugs. If you don’t mind taking a scenic drive you’ll find some of the best fly fishing in the entire state about an hour north of Breckenridge in the Gore Canyon. There are multiple companies that offer guided tours, lessons, and overnight excursions in the area as well.

If you’d prefer to stay a little closer to home there are two popular local spots that I recommend. The first, Blue River, is a small, wadeable river that’s easily accessible but offers a good challenge. If you have kids in tow or are less experienced, Ten Mile Creek follows I-70 from Copper Mountain to Frisco and, while easy to access, it isn’t heavily fished. This makes it a bit easier to catch small trout, rainbows, and brookies. It’s a great place for beginners and children. You can also expect to see beaver ponds along some areas of the creek.

Vail Bike Pass Shuttle with Alpine Sports

If fishing isn’t your cup of tea but you still want to take in the beautiful mountain scenery you might be interested in the Vail Bike Pass Shuttle with Alpine Sports.

This is a unique way for the entire family, all ages and abilities, to bike (cruise is a better term, really) down the mountain on a paved path. The adventure begins in Frisco, where Alpine Sports staff will fit each rider with the correctly sized bike and safety equipment before they shuttle the group to the top of the Vail Pass to the drop-off point. From the top, it’s an easy, 14-mile ride all the way back into town.

The Vail Bike Pass is a great way to spend an afternoon and truly is for all abilities. You can also get a discount if you book online; here’s the link
